Most JRs from the 17th served in the Vietnam war, many on
the troopship HMAS Sydney, a former aircraft carrier. However,
their service was not recognised in any form until 1984 when they were
finally acknowledged as having served in 'warlike' operations and awarded
(???) the
Return from Active Service Badge
(RAS Badge).
Finally in
1993 the Vietnam Logistics Support Medal
(VLSM) was issued
to those who served in a logistics support role, including
civilians. For those JRs eligible this was at least some sort of
recognition for service in a war zone. This was followed by the
Australian Service Medal (ASM) in 1995 and the
Australian Active Service Medal
(AASM) in 1998. The first form of recognition was 12 years after
Australia concluded its involvement in the war and the last - more than 26
years after the war.
